Noble attempt at balance, but you have some major facts wrong
Firstly, the end of the 1800’s when European Jews, escaping murderous, genocidal pogroms in Europe, began to migrate back to the ancient homeland from which they had been expelled, the Arab population in that area ( an area now called Palestine) was very small

Firstly, the end of the 1800’s when European Jews, escaping murderous, genocidal pogroms in Europe, began to migrate back to the ancient homeland from which they had been expelled, the Arab population in that area ( an area now called Palestine) was very small
Indeed remnant Jews who had lived there under Ottoman rule for several centuries were as plentiful
As European Jews arrived and began to restore the land from desert and swamps, with farms, communal communities ( kibbutzim, plural of kibbutz) and businesses, many Arabs came from surrounding countries - Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, Iraq to take advantage of opportunities developing there for work and a better life
Second, after anti-Jewish riots and counter actions, the new British Mandate came to an end, the UN partitioned Palestine ( the Arabs rejected their Palestinian state ) and Israel was created and recognized by the international bodies, the resulting war of 1947-8 broke out
By far most of local Arabs left at the loud behest and encouragement of the surrounding Arab statal armies waiting to invade ( this is much documented ) - so as to avoid harm and return after the anticipated Arab victories.
Only a few were forcibly expelled by the Israelis
There was no colonisation by the Jews - there was no colonial power behind their migrations. They were returning to their ancestral home by largely refugee migration - from pogroms and Holocaust in Europe and from hostile Middle Eastern countries
You left out only one part. 78% of the British Mandate in Palestine, the area east of the Jordan River, was chopped off by Britain, called Transjordan (later Jordan), and put off limits to Jewish habitation. The remaining 22%, west of the Jordan River and half the size of San Bernardino County CA was open to both Jews and Arabs. Today it's called Israel. Otherwise well done.
Definitely agreed, however Desmet is not wrong that nothing is black and white, but always shades of grey. I highly appreciate his attempts to humanize even those who are acting badly. The Israeli government has corrupted elements within it, just like any other, and it's important to keep that in mind as we try and sense-make on deeper levels
On one hand, things in life are black and white but not to Hamas to Hamas it just one thing and one thing only!! Eradicating the Jews from this world. Then move on to Christian’s, gays, trans etc.
The government of Israel is corrupt but they have come together as one in reference to getting every hostage dead or alive back home! If these 4 hostages rescued by the IDF tells you anything, it’s that Hamas does use civilians and that civilians are complicit in this war. That Al-Jazeera journalist had 3 hostages and his father (the doctor) had one! They get paid about $20 a day for each one. Noa Argamai begged for a shower and after days months of begging they gave her a bucket and a bar of soap. Fed her every couple of days and made her into a servant. Good thing, the old Doctor is so old he probably has ED so she wasn’t (at least not saying she was) raped. Others aren’t so lucky. This whole thing can end in a minute if Hamas just releases the hostages including Kifer Bebas the 1 year old! I wonder what Hamas really were thinking when the broke into Israel and committed acts of terror on civilians. And the biggest joke of all, they did these acts on people who helped them daily paid them a fair wage, took sick Gazans to Israeli hospitals for treatment and much more! The Nova Music Festival was all about peace. There were palestines working the show who got killed cause Hamas called them traitors. They killed a pregnant religious woman who was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. ( she was easily identified before they shot her by her hijab and clothing and her fluent Arabic but they still killed her. Left her husband with 7 children (I believe the number was 7)
Please they don’t give a shit about anyone’s lives not even their own. The big guy in Qatar whose worth 6 BILLION DOLLARS (our money) his 3 sons and grandson died in a blast (they were soldiers for Hamas) didn’t even blink when told his kids died. He couldn’t care less! It was for the cause! Sinwar said this week “No Blood, No News!” Well, there you have it! The truth will set you free!
If you’re in a hostile environment it just makes sense to move to potentially safer areas. The huge amount of physical work to make those farms viable is awe inspiring.
People should have the opportunity to build safe and nurturing communities for themselves.

Zionism is evil

Thanks for this, John. I need to read more.
